STUDENT
ATTENDANCE
STUDENT WITH VETERANS BENEFITS

Procedure

ATTENDANCE OF STUDENT WITH VETERANS BENEFITS

All students receiving Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits must notify the Veterans Certifying Official in writing through email of any enrollment changes as soon as they are made.  The Veterans Affairs benefit recipient needs to be aware that the VA may require repayment of all benefits received since the beginning of a semester for any course in which a “W” grade is received.

Reservists or members of the National Guard who are called into active duty after the start of a semester as a result of U.S. military demands have three options regarding tuition and fees  paid to attend a public college or university in Texas. According to state statutes and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board rules, students called into active duty after the start of a semester may choose to have their college or university:
  • Refund the tuition and fees paid for the semester;
  • Grant you (if eligible under the institution's guidelines) an incomplete grade in all courses by designating "withdrawn-military" on  official transcripts; or
  • As determined by the instructor, assign an appropriate final grade or credit, if the student has satisfactorily completed a substantial amount of coursework and demonstrated sufficient mastery of the material.

Please note: There are no provisions for refunds for active duty service members who are deployed as a result of military orders or for individuals who chose to enter into the service. The provisions listed above apply only to individuals called into active military service.

A copy of current military orders is required to process the request. If notification is not given prior to leaving for active duty, a debt could be incurred with any VA benefits in use.

Veterans or veterans’ dependents should see the section entitled Veterans Services (Student-Student Welfare – Student Support Services – Veterans Services) for more information on Veterans Affairs benefits.

Any student who wishes to dispute a decision concerning his/her absence should follow the Student/Instructor Conflict Resolution procedures in a timely fashion and as described in the current Navarro College Student Handbook.
